Abstract

This study examined the relationship between schools’ social responsibility and rural development in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Recognizing that educational institutions increasingly extend their responsibilities beyond classroom instruction, the study investigated how schools’ social responsibility in promoting socio-economic wellbeing, demographic adjustment, and political participation influences rural development. The study adopted a survey research design in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, with a sample size of 400 respondents was determined using Taro Yamane’s formula and selected through a multistage sampling procedure for the quantitative survey, while 10 school heads were purposively selected for Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), giving a total of 410 research participants. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and a Key Informant Interview guide. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, and Chi-square statistical techniques, while qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. The findings revealed significant positive relationships between schools’ social responsibility and the three dimensions of rural development examined. Specifically, schools’ community-based initiatives significantly enhanced socio-economic wellbeing, facilitated demographic adjustment, and promoted political participation, thereby contributing to sustainable rural development in the study area. The study concludes that schools have evolved into strategic community development institutions whose responsibilities extend beyond formal education to encompass broader socioeconomic transformation and community empowerment. It recommends strengthening partnerships among educational institutions, government agencies, and community stakeholders to institutionalize schools’ social responsibility programmes as sustainable mechanisms for promoting human capital development, social cohesion, community resilience, and inclusive rural development in Nigeria.
